About Sydney Underground Films

Sydney Underground Films was informally established in 2004, when Director Stefan Popescu and Producer Katherine Berger came together to make the feature film Rosebery 7470, in the small Tasmanian mining town of Rosebery. Completed in 2006, the film was well-received at a number of film festivals including Calgary International Film Festival, Melbourne Underground Film Festival and Minneapolis Underground Film Festival. In 2008 Accent Entertainment picked up the film for a DVD release in Australia and New Zealand.

In 2007, both Stefan Popescu and Katherine Berger started the Sydney Underground Film Festival and launched Sydney Underground Films to support independent filmmakers with a platform for the exhibition and exposure of their films with an annual festival every September and sales and distribution channels including DVD compilations and a short film television program made especially for community stations.

With the film festival taking place every September, it was decided that the downtime after the festival (Oct-March) would be used to produce and create feature length films and documentaries. Each film made by the production company is to be shot (at least 1/4) somewhere in the world other than Sydney and utilise the landscape and its townspeople to assist in constructing the narrative.

Keeping this aim in mind, Sydney Underground Films produced a film entitled, NUDE STUDY, that was shot in both the searing heat of mid north coast beach town of Port Macquarie, Australia and the frozen climate of small Yukon town of Dawson City, Canada. The film was shot over two periods in both 2008 and 2009 with the production team made up of Sydney Underground Film Festival staff, previous festival volunteers and other emerging film practitioners. The cast was predominantly non-actors.

Sydney Underground Films has since made another feature film in Dawson City, ZOMBIE MASSACRE III and is currently in development with several new projects.
